A N A L B U M
OF SONGS, HYMNS, AND ANTHEMS
ON TEXTS FROM
THE DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS 1-40
Composed December 2022 - July 2023.

"As I listened to Christian Asplund’s Listen Together, words multiplied in my mind, then dissipated, as though speechlessness was stalking me all the way to the last bar. I knew these brief pieces were freshly minted musical settings of verses from the Latter-day Saint Doctrine and Covenants. But with each setting, I felt the sum of them as a broad, profound meditation preserved in digital amber. And within it, Asplund’s eclectic discipline—with sources ranging from medieval plainchant to Schubert to vocal jazz, and many more—becomes a reverential processional of idioms, all shaped by his voice and hands. The former brought to mind both Stravinsky’s Babel—in which God’s voice is a male chorus—and Charles Ives’ exuberant solo rendering of his own songs—eccentric, yes, but with the authority of spouting directly from the creative stream. Asplund’s voice walks a tightrope, to be sure, teetering amid the subtle heterophonies of double-tracking and vocoder manipulations. Yet it constantly drapes divine words in rippling robes of affection. As for his hands, the surety of Asplund’s piano craft, both composed and played, locates it in a wholly other realm than the jangling of typical church meetings. The lines of counterpoint not only support but caress the words they surround. Indeed, the piano is its own fully developed voice, but one without phonemes, only syntax, inflection, color, and flow to denote meaning. And there is a deep well of meaning here indeed."
